Most of you have received information about the upcoming Spring activities, but most of the discussion has been kept among the Listserve.  This email is intended to try and ensure as many of our alumni are aware of the happenings over the next couple months in Waco as well as mention some other relevant alumni related news and events.
Golf Tournament 2000

The Alumni golf tournament will be held at Heather Run scheduled for Saturday, March 25th at 1:00 sharp. Entry fee is $60 per person and we would like to have the money and registration information of teams in by March 15th for planning purposes (how much food to order, how many people are playing, and etc). Food will be catered by Vitek’s Bar-B-Que and served at 11:30AM. We want everyone to come out and have a great time. Last year we were able to deposit $755 of the proceeds to the National Foundation to fund scholarships associated with TX Rho. This year we want to beat that number and we can only do you’re your participation and support. Please contact Chris Knudsen for further information regarding teams or any other details not listed at 254-753-4198 or Christopher_Knudsen@baylor.edu.

Alumni Board Letter

Brothers:
I hope this year finds you and your families well. As many of you know, the Texas Rho chapter has kicked off the year with a bang. The chapter took 21 new pledges and is excited about the coming year.
Chris Jones and I traveled to Waco on February 11th and met with the new executive board to discuss what we could do to help them in their pursuit of continuous improvement for Texas Rho.
The new executive board members were a great bunch of guys. I was impressed to see their energy and the genuine appreciation of having the alumni involved. The executive board is on the right track to have an incredible year. They currently lead all fraternities in service hours and have plans in place to stay on pace.
Discussions at the meeting focused on undergraduate finances, alumni finances, Texas Rho rush results, pledge programs, risk management, and undergraduate operations.
Of note, the following events and/or open issues were identified:

  • Alumni Finances: The alumni board is currently trying to get the Sigma Phi Epsilon National Education fund vested for Texas Rho. The initial vesting of $2500 will allow the chapter to draw from the account to invest in the scholarship and leadership programs for the chapter.
  • Undergraduate Finances: The chapter is currently in good standing with Nationals and is working to improve their operation budget. In support of this dues were raised by a nominal amount.
  • Alumni Mentor Program: Chris Jones and I expressed an interest in starting up a mentoring program for the chapter. Please let us know if you are interested in support this program and/or be prepared to help if asked. More to follow…
  • Alumni Board Meeting: We will plan to meet again on March 25th with the Executive board to review the semester and continue our involvement.
  • Risk Management: Roger Davis has volunteer his time to take TIPS training and will conduct risk management training with the under graduate chapter.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Alumni Golf Tournament in March. Please feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions or special concerns.

HFF,
David S. Newberry

Chapter News

President - The Spring 2000 semester is an exciting time to be a SigEp.  Our dramatic increase in manpower over the last two spring semesters has chapter morale at its highest point in the last few years. These great men have brought pride to Sigma Phi Epsilon through an increase in academics, intramurals, and sorority relations. Congratulations are due to Israel Garcia, V.P. of Recruitment, for bringing twenty-one outstanding men to our fraternity. SigEp is on the rise. Relations with Jerry at the ranch are at an all time high, we have six mixers scheduled for this semester alone, and if recruitment trends continue we will be well over a hundred-man chapter by Spring 2002. I hope that as alumni you will help us grow as a chapter. We have an alumni golf tournament scheduled for March 25th at the Heather Run course, and a SigEp tri-state softball tournament on April 8th in Arlington. These events always see a large alumni turnout, and are a great time for us to get together. I encourage you to become more involved with Tx. Rho. Alumni involvement is essential to the success of our chapter. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions do not hesitate to contact me.

Development - The Spring 00 pledge class began their pledgeship into our fraternity in early February. Their pledge trainer is senior, Cody Blackburn. As always the main goal of the pledge program is brotherhood. Cody and I have created numerous projects that we believe will help the pledges attain brotherly love. We also stress the importance of respect for the members, and SigEp as a whole. In order to attain these goals it is necessary to create a pledge program that has structure. The program has assistants for every aspect of the pledge period. The assistants are Tim Hunter, Greg Leflar, Anthony Chiniara, Kyle Herring (service), Eric Hurt (ranch), Zach Armstrong (pledge project), Jeff Beck and Clint Cottle (study hall). Along with service, the pledges have been actively participating in mixers and fraternity functions. They are also planning on doing a ropes course and a fundraiser for the fraternity. The Spring 00 pledge class was the largest to be taken at Baylor this year. They exceed the +5 recruitment challenge set by nationals. All of you should be proud of this pledge class because of its recruitment and demeanor.

Ranch - As SigEp ranch foreman it gives me great pride pleasure to announce that the chapter has been very active at the ranch this year. Members meet at the ranch every Tuesday, and perform a series of chores ranging from clearing brush in the back to keeping the front looking respectable. Jerry has expressed sincere gratitude for our efforts and still allows us to fish and hold social activities out there. It is obvious to me that the ranch is our biggest asset.   As a chapter we are doing our best to continue to uphold the traditions of hard work and brotherhood that would have made Aunt Helon and Uncle Barry proud.

Service - As Texas Rho moves into the Spring 2000 semester the service program continues to hold strong. SigEp currently holds a substantial lead over all other Baylor fraternities in number of service hours. With increased manpower provided by our strong pledge class, the service program can grow. We are currently working along side the Waco Boy’s and Girl’s Club to better the community. We hope to see further success in this increasingly integral sector of fraternity life.

Intramurals - SigEp continues to uphold the importance of intramurals. As our numbers continue to grow we constantly add depth to our intramural standing. Right now we are running in the middle of the pack. However, through increased participation and three dedicated intramural chairmen our rank is increasing. We made playoffs in almost every sport and continue to employ our sneak tactic of using our arsenal of coordinated third team players to dominate the fat bracket. We are preparing for the rest of the Spring semester to finish in the top five on campus.

Campaign For The Balanced Man

Back in 1995, our Conclave saw the passing of legislative action which encouraged chapters to develop a plan with its alumni to establish a $50,000 scholarship fund, restricted for its educational programs.  This may seem like a lofty goal to a few of you, but we are quickly becoming a mature membership (with close to 650 alumni) that has the power to easily make this goal attainable.  Your participation is the most important thing...  so please participate by pledging any amount.  Brothers helping Brothers is what sets Texas Rho's Educational Foundation apart from the wide array of options you face in charitable giving.

Thanks for your support,
The SigEp Alumni Board of Texas Rho
