WACO, Texas (AP) - Rashad
Armstrong's 4-yard touchdown run on Baylor's first
second-half drive gave the Bears the winning margin as
they beat SMU 10-7 Saturday night for their first win
under coach Guy
Morriss.
The Bears (1-2) had just 182 total yards, their
second-lowest in a win since 1956. But after a
last-minute loss in their opener and a turnover-filled
debacle last week, they will take any win any way.
Keylon Kincade ran for 113 yards on 30 carries for
SMU (0-2), which outgained Baylor with 204 total yards.
Baylor has won eight straight games against the
Mustangs, though the old Southwest Conference rivals
were playing for the first time since 1995, that
league's last season.
Since then, both teams have struggled for wins, ad
both were coming off bad losses. Baylor had turnovers
its first six possessions in a 52-14 loss at North Texas
last week, and the Mustangs lost 58-10 at Texas Tech in
their opener two weeks ago.
The Bears won their 18th game since joining the Big
12. SMU, now in the WAC, has 26 wins the last eight
seasons, and had four taken away because of an
ineligible player in 1998.
Baylor's first drive of the second half started at
the SMU 35 after Willie Andrews' 22-yard punt return.
Aaron Karas' 19-yard pass to Robert
Quiroga and a facemask penalty against SMU set up
Armstrong's TD run.
Kenny
Webb, who kicked a 47-yard field goal in the first
half, missed a 51-yard attempt on Baylor's next
possession.
After the missed field goal, SMU managed only one
first down before punting and got into Baylor territory
only one other time. Chris McMurtray was wide left on a
38-yard field goal attempt midway with 8:32 left.
Chris Cunningham's 22-yard punt return late in the
first quarter set up the Mustangs at Baylor 33, and they
needed nine plays to score. Kincade had seven carries
for 18 yards, twice converting third-and-short, before
Richard Bartel's 5-yard TD pass to Matt Rushbrook.
During a 4½-minute stretch in the second quarter
when they deflected a punt, recovered a fumble on a
botched punt return and had an interception, the Bears
managed just a field goal.
Baylor went three-and-out after the 8-yard SMU punt,
but its line-drive punt bounced off Cunningham and was
recovered by Quiroga at the 18. After Karas was sacked
on consecutive plays, Webb kicked his field goal.
Andrews then intercepted a pass by Bartel at the SMU
30, but Baylor gave the ball back two plays later when
Armstrong fumbled.
