Sigma Phi Epsilon, the nation's largest fraternity with over 250
chapters, was chartered at Baylor in 1976 becoming the second national social fraternity
on campus. Before 1976, all the fraternities and sororities at Baylor were local
clubs like KOT, Alpha Omega (now Pi Phi), Athenia Society (now KKGamma), etc. We
were a little different because we were formerly a national business fraternity being
forced to go co-ed. An early pledge class was known to nickname itself the Raiders
and their colors were black and silver to show some respect for the older members.
Subsequent pledge classes are still taught the song "SigEp Raiders".
The early years of SigEp saw the fraternity meeting and becoming
close friends with Mr. and Mrs. Berry Winn (Uncle Berry and Aunt Helon)
and during the 70s, 80s, 90s and into 2000 the chapter helped take care of their ranch as part of the
strong service ethic maintained by the actives. The Winn's still hold a place in all
our hearts. Even as they have both passed away, we still find their memory one of the best
things when reminiscing about our fraternity experience.
Although Baylor does not allow fraternities to have official houses,
there have been predominant social houses of each era. Some of these include the house at
9th and James (Garrigan, Schrupp and Burch), #607 UP, 4th and Clay in the early 80's, 'The
Palace' of the 80's/early 90's, 1011 Speight (with unbreakable couch) in the early 90s,
the 'Big Nasty', and other houses on Speight and James.
SigEp has always maintained a diverse membership and the
brotherhood continues to pride itself on its fraternal growth through social activities,
service, and member development.

Texas Rho boasts many very distinguished
alumni:
Keith Bishop ('78) -
Selected by the Denver Broncos
in the 1980 draft. Played Center and Guard earning consecutive appearances in the
1986 and 87 Pro Bowls. He was the first Broncos offensive lineman ever named to the
all-star game. Recognized by his coaches and teammates as team leader and unselfish
player and was given Bob Peck Memorial Award as team's most inspirational player in 1987.
Played with the Broncos in Superbowls XXII, XXII and XXIV. At Baylor he was
starting center and elected tri-captain in 1979 and has since served as strength coach for
the Bears upon retiring from the NFL. Dallas
Observer article about Bishop's involvement with the DEA.
William "Vann" McElroy ('80)
- Los
Angeles/Oakland Raiders Free Safety, played on the Superbowl XVIII Championship
team. Known as an intimidating punisher with excellent range and speed at
Baylor, he was
an All Southwest Conference selection in 1980 and 1981, Consensus All-American
in 1981 and drafted #3 by the Raiders in 1982. A three-time
Pro Bowler, Vann led the AFC in interceptions in '83. He has recently been a Dallas
based sports agent along with Scott Casterline ('80) representing clients such as Curtis
Enis of the Chicago Bears.
Mark Adickes ('80)
- Washington Redskins Offensive
Lineman, played on the Superbowl XXVI Championship team. The following is a quote
from Richard Justice of the Washington Post writing on the history of the Redskins:
"I made sure to go to the same players every week for quotes, players I thought had a
sense of humor, and an appreciation for the organic quality of The Bandwagon, mostly
offensive linemen, who are generally the smartest guys on a football team. I'd go to them
after a game and say, 'Gimme a quote for The Bandwagon.' And they would. Without Russ
Grimm, Jeff Bostic, Terry Orr and Mark Adickes, among others, I couldn't have sustained
The Bandwagon's prediction machine. (Adickes, by the way, went on to Harvard Medical
School to be a doctor, not a patient!)". Mark also played for the Kansas
City Chiefs and alongside Steve Young with the LA Express of the USFL.
